# Verses on a Cross made and dedicated by Stigand, bishop of Winchester, archbishop of Canterbury (1052-70) [In folio versus finem hosce versus characteribus Saxonicis descriptos reperi:] Suppositae trabi superest crux sanctior omni, corpora sanctorum cui plurima sancta supersunt. Hoc crucis signo nos protege, Christe redemptor! Sic fecit praesul Stigand in nomine Christi hic qui corde rogat, ueniam te dante reportet. [‘This Cross, more sacred than anything else, stands above the supporting beam, above which are found the several holy relics of saints [in the cross-reliquary]. Protect us with the sign of this Cross, O Christ our Redeemer! Bishop Stigand constructed it in the name of Christ in such a way that whoever prays here in his heart may receive forgiveness at Your bequest’ Lapidge, p. 71, fn. 109]
